I have discovered an interesting phenomenon about myself… Because I have spent my whole life conforming to everyone else’s rules and making sure I do it right by their rules, I haven’t had the opportunity to spend a lot of time creating my own rules. Currently I am working on my Curriculum Diamond and Layered Curriculum assignment for this class. I am discovering that it is stretching me to the painful edges of my comfort zone because I am required to come up with the rules. I am to take the core essentials the state of Utah requires children to know about a specific topic – any standard – and decide what can be done above and beyond those standards to stretch the children that may be gifted and talented, or how the workload can be minimized for those who are struggling. Interestingly, according to the Layered Curriculum design, everything that the State requires would be a “C grade” level assignment if only those were completed. Everything above the minimum required stuff is a higher grade, anything beneath is a lower grade. I feel a tad frustrated because I’m discovering that a lifelong pattern of following other people’s rules makes it really difficult for me to see beyond what has already been given me. Hmmmm….
